I use this PLM/EISY in simple home application with lighting, scenes, motion sensors & Alexa. Much simpler to use then adding the serial adapter cables for the RJ45 model PLM.
My Insteon USB Modem is attached to a Homeseer controller. The modem controls all of the Insteon modules and switches in my second home so if the USB Modem fails, my home is literally in the dark until I travel there to address the issue. This is the 3rd Insteon USB modem in the last 4 years. The first two were from the company under old management. Without this modem, none of my second home lighting automation works so I was relieved when new management started manufacturing this device again and further pleased to see that the documentation indicates some of the hardware was upgraded to make the device more reliable. If this device fails, thousands of dollars of Insteon modules and switches stop functioning. So I hope this third, upgraded USB Modem model will be far more reliable than the last two. It would be nice if more than one could be purchased at a time given that, after 2 failures, I always need to maintain a backup and shipping costs are rather expensive. I gave 5 stars giving the benefit of the doubt to new management that this updated USB Modem will be more reliable. If it isn't more reliable, this would be more of a 1 or 2 Star review.
I'm on my third one of these PLM devices. They work great for about 1-2 years and then suddenly stop working without any notice or error.
I'm locked into these or I'd switch to something else since the frailty of this device makes it unreliable at best.
The real problem is it has to be connected to the electrical grid and can't have any line filters so it is exposed to many different challenges including surges which it seems usually wipes it out.
Oddly enough, my other Insteon relay also connected to the line has lasted for 2-3 years or longer.
Hi Marc, we're very sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience with the Insteon PLMs. Was the failure from your recent purchase in July? If so, we would very much like to get more details from you and review the failed unit since there have been component improvements in the newer units we are selling.
If this review is for a unit purchased before the new owners took over in June '22, we would very much appreciate if you would reconsider the low rating and give the replacement PLM some time to prove itself as an improvement over the older, more failure-prone units. If not, we completely understand.
This is the premier USB modem for INSTEON systems. It works fine (I use Indigo with it), but it seems to have a physical flaw that makes it fail after typically a few years. Do keep spares; you’ll need them.
The USB PLM I had been using for many years finally failed. I considered having it repaired, but the repair cost was $150, so I considered replacing all of my Insteon devices with other technology. Then I found out that the USB PLM was still being sold and at the same price I paid years ago, so I bought one. Replacing it within IndigoDomo was trivial - Indigo realized I was replacing the old and reworked all of the links for me, removing the orphaned links from my Insteon devices.
